6th Grade Math Syllabus

6th Grade Math  -  Mr. Seasock

   CURRICULUM

We will be following the Common Core Standards for 6th grade math.

The text we will be using is titled Middle School Math, Course 1 by Scott Foresman, Addison Wesley.  Due to our text not meeting many of the content requirements, supplemental materials, such as worksheets, will often be used in class.

   Students will be taught to:

  • Understand ratio relationships and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division of fractions.
  • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find factors and multiples.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of the rational number system.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
  • Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
  • Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
  • Solve problems involving area, surface area and volume.
  • Develop understanding of statistical variability.  Summarize and describe distributions.

     NECESSARY MATERIALS

  1. Folder – A simple two pocket folder dedicated to this class only will allow students to store and transport homework in a neat and organized manner.  Folded and torn papers will not be accepted. Notes are generally provided by the teacher and worked on in class, they are to be kept in the folder.  There will be a graded note check prior to every unit test.
  2. Pencils, erasers – All homework, quizzes and tests must be completed in pencil.  Work done in ink, even erasable, is not accepted in this class. Mistakes must be erased, not scribbled out.
  3. Colored pencils and a ruler – At least two colored pencils to show inverse operations in equation solving.  Accuracy and neatness are important.
  4. Textbook – One textbook will be issued to each student at the start of the year.  It must be brought to class every day.   These are very old text books and generally in poor condition.  Please treat them with care.

     HOMEWORK

Homework will be a part of this class.  Homework can be expected three to four times per week and unless otherwise directed, is due the following day.  Students are allowed two days for each day of excused absence to make up the work.  It is the responsibility of the student to request, complete and turn-in absent work.

     HOMEWORK FORMAT

Homework must be done neat and accurately in pencil.  The correct heading must be on all homework assignments; that includes – first and last name, date, class period and page numbers and problems that were assigned.

CATCH-UP MATH

We use an online math remediation program called Catch-Up Math.  It is a mandatory part of our

class.  We have experienced positive results in student progress using this program.  Please let me

know if you do not have on-line access at home and I can make other arrangements for your child.

GRADING

Use your MISTAR Parent Connection (formerly Zangle) to view your child’s grades.  I use a total point system to determine student grades.  Typically, a regular assignment is worth 10 points, quizzes are worth 20 points, projects are worth up to 50 points and tests are worth 50 to 100 points.  These may vary depending on a number of factors.  I use the grading scale published in the Code of Conduct for the middle school.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Additional teacher made progress reports will be distributed to students in class every few weeks, typically on Fridays.  These reports are in addition to the mid-marking period progress reports that are distributed by the office.  Classroom progress reports will list all assignments and corresponding grades for the current marking period; they also reflect the students’ overall grade as of the printing date.  Please note the dates below of progress report distribution:

     Sept. 21,  Oct. 19,  Nov. 30,  Jan. 11,  Feb. 15,  March 8,  April 26,  May 17.

GRADE ASSISTANCE

Grade assistance is an after-school program designed to provide students with an opportunity to receive additional instruction, make-up missing assignments, and redo low assignments.  The program will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. once or twice a week; the actual day(s) will be provided to students on a weekly basis.  Assignments must be made up before the test on that material.

CLASSROOM RULES

  1. Bring necessary materials to class and be prepared to work.
  2. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings; remain there unless excused by the teacher.
  3. Raise hand to be recognized.
  4. Follow teacher direction the first time given.
  5. Respect the rights and property of others.
  6. Adhere to the Student Code of Conduct.
